What the porutham calculator shows

A total out of 10 (1 for uttamam, ½ for madhyamam, 0 for adhamam — we say so because some almanacs count only full passes); all ten poruthams in the traditional order, each with its grade and a one-line reason (“Hasta is the 10th star from Rohini”, “both stars in Kantha rajju”); Rajju and Vedha dosha called out on their own, because the tradition treats them as stop signs rather than lost points; the star count used, so you can check it against a pandit's working; each person's nakshatra, pada, Moon sign, gana and yoni; and a same-star note when both Moons are in one nakshatra.

The ten poruthams, and which matter most

Rajju comes first in weight, whatever its place in the list: the same rajju is read as a threat to the couple's longevity, and most families will not proceed past it. Vedha is the second dosha. After those, Dina (health), Gana (temperament), Yoni (physical compatibility), Rasi (the distance between the Moon signs), Rasyadhipathi (friendship of the sign lords) and Vasya (attraction) are the major six. Mahendra (children) and Stree Deergha (the wife's well-being) are minor; many almanacs leave them out and call the rest ashta porutham. Counts run from the girl's star to the boy's, the Tamil and Kerala convention.

Porutham vs Gun Milan

This is the southern method. North Indian families use the 36-guna Ashtakoota (Gun Milan), which starts from the same two Moons but scores eight kootas in points. Four tests appear in both — Gana, Yoni, Rasi (Bhakoot) and Rasyadhipathi (Graha Maitri) — and Dina is close to Tara. Rajju, Vedha, Mahendra and Stree Deergha belong to porutham only; Nadi belongs to Gun Milan only. Because the lists differ, a pair can pass one system and fail the other; use the one your family uses, and do not read a guna score as a porutham result.

What porutham does not check

Only the two Moons. Chevvai (Mangal) dosham, the 7th houses and their lords, the dashas either person will be running, and the navamsa are all separate, and a pandit doing a full jathagam porutham reads them alongside the ten. Nor does any of it describe character, values or the effort two people will put in. A clean ten is encouraging; a failed rajju is a reason to look closer and talk to someone who reads the whole chart, not a verdict on the couple.
