What the calculator shows

Whether the pattern forms; which type (from Rahu's house); whether it is full or partial; which side of the axis the planets fall on (the udit/anudit question); any planet within a degree of a node; and your chart drawn so you can see the Rahu–Ketu line and everything on one side of it. If it does not form, the result names the planet that escaped — so you know exactly why a quick-look table elsewhere may have said otherwise.

How it is judged

Rahu and Ketu are always exactly opposite each other, so they cut the zodiac into two halves. Measure every planet's sidereal longitude and ask: are all seven in the same half? If yes, Kaal Sarp. If a planet sits a few degrees outside, no. If a planet sits within about a degree of either node, partial, because many astrologers read a planet touching the serpent's mouth or tail as breaking the enclosure. Degrees, not signs, decide it; that is why two sites can disagree about the same birth.

Where it comes from — and a fair warning

Kaal Sarp is not in Parashara, Jaimini, Varahamihira or the other classical authors. It became popular in the twentieth century, and a great deal of fear — and a great deal of puja revenue — has grown around it. Plenty of very successful people have it. The fair reading is that it describes a concentration of planetary energy on one side of the chart: focus and intensity, with a tendency to delays and sudden turns. Serious astrologers read it with the dasha, the Moon and Jupiter, never alone. Ours reports it because you came looking for it, and says what it is.

The types

Each type takes its name from Rahu's house and its theme from that house's meaning — Anant (1st) the self, Kulik (2nd) family and wealth, Vasuki (3rd) effort and siblings, Shankhpal (4th) home, Padma (5th) children and learning, Mahapadma (6th) enemies and debt, Takshak (7th) marriage, Karkotak (8th) longevity and inheritance, Shankhachud (9th) fortune and father, Ghatak (10th) career, Vishdhar (11th) gains, Sheshnag (12th) losses and foreign lands. Ketu always sits opposite, adding the opposite house's theme.
