What the result shows
Your Vedic moon sign with its Sanskrit and Hindi names, the Moon's exact degree, the nakshatra and pada it falls in, the sign's ruling planet, element and name letters, and next to it your Western (tropical) moon sign. When the two differ, as they do for about four people in five, the result explains why in one paragraph rather than leaving you to wonder which site is wrong.
Moon sign, sun sign, lagna — which one is “my sign”?
If you grew up on magazine horoscopes, “your sign” meant the Sun's sign. In India, “your rashi” means the Moon's sign — that is what aaj ka rashifal is written for, what a pandit asks before a puja, and what kundli matching compares. The lagna (ascendant) is a third thing: the sign on the eastern horizon at your birth, which fixes the twelve houses. All three are in your chart; this page gives you the Moon.
If you don't know your birth time
Tick the box. The Moon spends about 54 hours in a sign, so on most dates it is in the same sign from midnight to midnight and your rashi is certain. When it does change sign on your birth date, we show both signs and the time it switched — “Taurus before 09:12, Gemini after” — so a rough idea of morning or evening usually decides it. The nakshatra pada and the dasha balance are finer and may still need a time.
Why the Vedic and Western answers can differ
Both systems divide the sky into twelve signs of 30°. Western astrology starts Aries at the point where the Sun crosses the equator in March (the tropical zodiac). Vedic astrology starts Aries at a fixed point among the stars (the sidereal zodiac). Because of the slow wobble of the Earth's axis, those two starting points have drifted about 24° apart — the ayanamsa. So a Moon at 10° Gemini in a Western chart is at about 16° Taurus in a Vedic one. Neither is a mistake; for rashifal, matching and dasha, use the Vedic sign.

How this calculator works
- Birth moment
- Local time converted to UTC through the IANA time-zone history of the birth place, including historical offsets and daylight saving.
- Moon's position
- Apparent geocentric longitude from the ELP lunar theory (astronomia), checked against Meeus' worked examples.
- Two zodiacs
- The tropical longitude gives the Western sign; subtracting the Lahiri ayanamsa gives the Vedic (sidereal) sign. Both degrees are printed.
- Unknown time
- Moon computed at 00:00 and 23:59 local; if the sign differs, we bisect to the minute of the change.
The same engine casts the full janam kundli, so results here and there always agree. How we check the maths →
