Two zodiacs, one Sun

Both systems cut the Sun's yearly path into twelve equal signs of 30°. The difference is where they start counting. The tropical zodiac starts Aries at the point where the Sun crosses the equator heading north — the March equinox. The sidereal zodiac starts Aries at a fixed point among the stars. Two thousand years ago those points coincided. Because the Earth's axis slowly wobbles, they have drifted apart by a little over 24° and keep drifting about one degree every 72 years. That offset is the ayanamsa.

So a Sun at 10° Aries in a Western chart sits at about 16° Pisces in a Vedic one. Same Sun, same sky — different ruler laid over it. If you were born in roughly the first three weeks of a Western sign, your Vedic sun sign is the sign before. If you were born in the last week, the two agree.

Which one should you use?

For anything Vedic — your kundli, dasha timing, matching, an Indian rashifal — use the sidereal sign this page gives you. For Western horoscopes, use the tropical one. Neither is “more accurate”; they are different maps. The one thing to avoid is reading a Vedic chart with a Western sun sign, or vice versa.

Worth knowing: in Vedic astrology the Sun is not the headline planet it is in the West. Indian daily horoscopes are written for the Moon sign, and the chart itself is read from the lagna. The Sun stands for the self, vitality, authority and the father — important, but one voice among nine.

Born on a sankranti?

Twelve days a year the Sun changes sign. If your birthday is one of them, the time matters, and the calculator says so: it shows the exact local time the Sun crossed and which sign applies before and after. For every other date the time is irrelevant and the date alone is enough.

Why the dates move

The Sun enters Mesha (sidereal Aries) on 13 or 14 April depending on the year, and the exact minute shifts every year because the calendar year and the Sun's year are not the same length. That is why the table below is computed for 2026 rather than copied from an old book, and why the calculator looks up the sankranti for your birth year rather than assuming.
