Where the letter table comes from

The zodiac has 27 nakshatras, each with four padas (108 in all), and tradition assigns each pada a starting syllable. A child was named from the pada the Moon was in at birth: born with the Moon in Rohini pada 2, the name began with Va; Pushya pada 3, Ho; Magha pada 1, Ma. Every rashi holds nine padas, so each rashi collects nine syllables, and that is the table people use to go the other way — from a name back to a rashi.

Naam rashi vs janma rashi

This is the honest caveat. The table only “works” if the name followed the custom. Many names do, and many do not: family names, names after a grandparent, modern names, English names. In those cases naam rashi tells you about the name, not the person. Your janma rashi, the Moon's sign at birth, is what horoscopes, dasha and matching actually use. Spelling, sounds and conjuncts

Indian names are romanised loosely — Shreya, Shriya, Sreya are one name. The tool reduces both the name and the table to sounds before comparing: the opening consonant (keeping aspirates like Bh, Dh, Kh, Chh and the Sh sound) and the first vowel (Aa → A, Ee → I, Oo → U, Ai → E, Au → O). A conjunct like Kr- or Pr- is read as its first consonant. When the exact syllable is not in the table, we show every rashi that shares the opening consonant rather than guessing — you know how the name is pronounced; we don't.

One known ambiguity: the Sh sound. The Hasta table puts Sha in Kanya; several popular tables list Sh- under Kumbha with Sa. Both are in use. We show Kanya for Sha and Kumbha for Sa/Si/Su/Se/So, and flag the choice.
