How to read your kundli

Start at the top of the result. The lagna is the sign that was rising in the east when you were born; it becomes your first house and everything else is counted from it. The Moon sign (rashi) is what Indian horoscopes, matching and the dasha system use, and the nakshatra is the finer division of it — your birth star. The sun sign is the third “sign”, the one Western astrology reads; in the sidereal zodiac it is often one sign earlier than the one you grew up with.

Then the table: each graha with its sign, exact degree, house and nakshatra. Planets in the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th (kendras) and the 5th and 9th (trikonas) carry the most weight; planets in their own or exalted signs are strong; the ℞ mark shows a planet moving retrograde. Below it, the dasha timeline tells you which planet's period you are living through now, and the dosha cards say whether Mangal, Kaal Sarp or Sade Sati apply — with the placement that caused it and the cancellation when one does.

North Indian or South Indian?

The same chart, two drawings. The North Indian diamond keeps the houses fixed — the lagna is always the top-centre diamond — and writes each sign's number inside its house. The South Indian square keeps the signs fixed — Aries is always the same cell — and marks which one is the lagna. Toggle between them on the result and use whichever your family or astrologer reads; the Lal Kitab and KP charts have their own conventions and their own pages.

Don't know your birth time?

The lagna changes sign about every two hours, so the houses need a time. The Moon sign, nakshatra and the slow planets mostly do not. Use the Moon sign, nakshatra, Sade Sati and dasha calculators with “I don't know my birth time” — they tell you honestly whether the time would have mattered on your date. If you have a rough window, birth-time rectification narrows it from dated life events; and the lagna calculator shows how many minutes of margin your recorded time has.

Why your kundli can look different on another site

Almost always one of three things. The ayanamsa — we use Lahiri, the Indian government standard; sites using Raman or KP shift every planet by up to about 1.5°, which moves a Moon or lagna that sits near a boundary. The time zone — an old birth entered with today's daylight-saving rules, or a pre-1906 Indian birth recorded in local mean time (our form asks, when it matters). Or the house system — whole-sign here, as almost every Indian chart is drawn; Placidus cusps in KP and Western charts.
