How does kundli matching by name work?

Accepted Answer

Traditionally a child's name began with the syllable of the Moon's nakshatra pada at birth, so the first sound of a name points to a nakshatra and rashi. Name matching takes that nakshatra for each person and runs the same 36-point Ashtakoot Guna Milan that date-of-birth matching uses. When a name's syllable appears in more than one place in the table, we ask you to pick the pronunciation.

Is matching by name as accurate as by date of birth?

Accepted Answer

No. It is only as good as the assumption that the name follows the birth nakshatra, which is true for many traditional names and false for modern, family or English names. When it holds, the score is identical to a date-of-birth match; when it does not, it is a score for the names, not the people. Use it as a first look and confirm with birth details.

Which name should I enter — birth name, rashi name or the name I use?

Accepted Answer

The rashi name (the one given from the birth nakshatra at the naming ceremony) if you know it — that is the one the method assumes. Otherwise the name in everyday use, spelt as it is said. Nicknames and English names will give a score for the sound, not the chart.

Can I match with names only, without dates of birth?

Accepted Answer

Yes, that is what this tool does. But even a date of birth without a time is enough for a proper Guna Milan on most dates — the Moon stays in one nakshatra for about a day — so if you have the dates, use the full Guna Milan calculator instead.

What is a good score by name?

Accepted Answer

The same bands apply: 18 and above acceptable, 25–32 very good, 33–36 excellent, with Nadi and Bhakoot doshas able to override. But add a grain of salt for the name assumption.

Does name matching check Manglik dosha?

Accepted Answer

It cannot — Mangal Dosha needs the houses, which need the birth time and place. Name matching gives the eight kootas only. Check Manglik status separately for both charts once you have birth details.

What if the two names start with the same letter?

Accepted Answer

Same first sound usually means the same nakshatra pada, which scores very high on the gunas (often 28 or more, sometimes 36). Nadi is the catch: the same nakshatra always means the same nadi, so Nadi dosha appears and is then cancelled by the same-nakshatra rule. The calculator shows the whole working either way.

Do pandits actually use name matching?

As a fallback when birth details are missing, yes — it is an old convention, not an invention of the internet. Every pandit will prefer the birth charts when they exist.

My name could be pronounced two ways. Which rashi is right?

Accepted Answer

The one that matches how the name is actually said. When the table is ambiguous — Di appears in both Karka and Meena, Ta in both Simha and Tula — the tool lists the options with their nakshatra padas and lets you choose.

Question 10

Should I still get the full kundli matched if the name match is good?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A good name match is a good sign, not a decision. The full match adds Mangal Dosha, the 7th houses, the dashas and the navamsa — and confirms the Moon positions from the sky rather than from a naming custom.
