In short

Kundli matching by name uses the first syllable of each name to find the birth nakshatra and Moon sign (rashi), then runs the same 36-point Ashtakoot Guna Milan as date-of-birth matching. It is a useful estimate when birth details are unknown, but it cannot check Manglik dosha or the planets — full date-of-birth matching is more accurate.

How a name becomes a nakshatra

The 27 nakshatras have four padas each, and every one of the 108 padas has a traditional starting syllable — the Avakahada chakra. A child born with the Moon in Rohini pada 2 was named with Va; in Pushya pada 3, Ho. Working backwards, “Varun” points to Rohini pada 2 and Taurus; “Hitesh” to Punarvasu pada 4 and Cancer. Once each name has a nakshatra and pada, the eight kootas are computed exactly as they would be from a chart.

Where it goes wrong, and what we do about it

Two things. First, the assumption: many names were not chosen from the birth star, and then the score describes the names, not the couple, which is why the result is labelled a first look. Second, spelling: Indian names are romanised loosely, and some syllables appear in two rashis (Di in Karka and Meena; Ta in Simha and Tula; To in Kanya and Vrishchika). We reduce names to sounds before matching, and when the table is genuinely ambiguous we show the options with their nakshatra padas and let you choose how the name is said, instead of silently picking one.

When you have the dates

Use the full Guna Milan calculator. A date of birth without a time is enough on most days, because the Moon stays in one nakshatra for about a day — and you get the same eight kootas from the sky rather than from a custom. With times and places you can add Mangal Dosha for both, which no name-based method can reach.

How the matching works

Name → sound
Opening consonant (digraphs kept, conjuncts cut to their first sound) plus first vowel, collapsed to A/I/U/E/O — so Shreya, Shriya and Sreya agree.
Sound → pada
Looked up in the 108-pada table; if a sound sits in two rashis, you pick the pronunciation.
Pada → Moon
The pada's mid-point longitude fixes nakshatra, pada and rashi — all eight kootas depend only on those.

The same engine casts the full janam kundli, so results here and there always agree. How we check the maths →
