In short

Mangal Dosha (Manglik or Kuja Dosha) is present when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house counted from the lagna, the Moon or Venus. In the 7th or 8th, or flagged from two or three of those points, it is purna (full); from one point in a milder house it is anshik (partial). Classical rules cancel many technical cases: Mars in its own or exalted sign, Jupiter's aspect, and several sign-and-house exemptions.

What the calculator shows

Mars's sign, degree and house; a three-row check — from the lagna, from the Moon, from Venus — each marked Manglik house or clear; a grade (not Manglik / anshik / full); and then the part most calculators skip: each cancellation rule tested against your chart with a one-line reason. The verdict at the top is the net result. Your birth chart is drawn beside it so you can see where Mars is.

Why the houses matter

The 1st house is the self and temperament; the 4th is home and domestic peace; the 7th is the partner and the marriage; the 8th is the partnership's longevity and the partner's wellbeing; the 12th is bed comforts and losses; the 2nd is family and speech. Mars — heat, assertion, impatience — in those places is read as friction where harmony is wanted. Mars in the 7th or 8th is the strongest statement; in the 2nd or 12th the mildest.

Anshik vs purna

There is no single authority, but the working rule most astrologers use: Mars in a Manglik house from two or three of the reference points, or in the 7th or 8th from the lagna, is full; from one reference point only, or in the milder houses, it is partial. Some also weigh Mars's strength — retrograde, combust, debilitated in Cancer — which the AI astrologer can discuss for your chart.

The “age 28” idea

You will hear that Mangal Dosha “ends” at 28. It is not in Parashara; it is a practitioners' convention based on Mars maturing at that age. Charts do not change at 28. What changes is that people marry with more judgement, and matchmakers relax. Treat it as a softening, not a switch.

What to do with the result

If the verdict is “not Manglik” or “cancelled”, most astrologers would not let Mars block a match. If it is anshik or full, the traditional answers are to match with another Manglik, to look for Saturn, Rahu or Ketu in the same houses of the partner's chart, or to read both charts as a whole — which is what Guna Milan plus a human astrologer does. Mangal Dosha is one consideration in matching, not the whole of it.

How this calculator works

Chart
Full kundli from date, time and place (VSOP87/ELP positions, Lahiri ayanamsa, whole-sign houses) — the same engine as /free-janam-kundli.
Three counts
Mars's house from the lagna sign, from the Moon's sign and from Venus's sign. Houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 12 flag the dosha.
Grade
Full if Mars is in the 7th/8th from the lagna or flagged from two or more reference points; otherwise partial (anshik); none if not flagged from the lagna and not from Moon/Venus.
Cancellations
Own/exalted sign; Jupiter conjunct or aspecting (5th/7th/9th); sign-house exemptions (Aries-1st, Scorpio-4th, Capricorn/Cancer-7th, Sagittarius/Pisces-8th, Taurus/Libra-12th); Leo or Aquarius lagna. Any one applying makes the verdict 'cancelled'.

The same engine casts the full janam kundli, so results here and there always agree. How we check the maths →
