What is Mangal Dosha (Manglik dosha)?

Mangal Dosha — also Kuja Dosha or Chevvai Dosham in the south — is the placement of Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the birth chart, counted from the lagna and, in most traditions, also from the Moon and Venus. A person with it is called Manglik. It is read as a marriage consideration: Mars in those houses is held to bring friction or delay in married life unless it is balanced or cancelled.

Which houses cause Mangal Dosha?

The 1st (self), 2nd (family and speech — included by South Indian practice and some northern authorities), 4th (home and happiness), 7th (marriage and partner), 8th (longevity of the partnership) and 12th (bed comforts and losses). Mars in the 7th or 8th is read as the strongest placement; in the 2nd or 12th the mildest.

What is anshik (partial) Manglik?

Anshik Manglik usually means Mars is in a Manglik house from only one reference point (say the lagna but not the Moon or Venus), or in one of the milder houses (2nd, 12th, sometimes 1st and 4th). Full (purna) Manglik is Mars in a Manglik house from two or three reference points, or in the 7th or 8th. The calculator shows all three counts so you can see which applies.

Is Manglik dosha checked from the lagna, the Moon or Venus?

Classically from the lagna; most practising astrologers also check from the Moon (for the mind and emotional life) and from Venus (for the marriage itself). Agreement across all three is read as the strongest dosha. We show all three.

When is Mangal Dosha cancelled?

The commonly applied cancellations: Mars in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn); Jupiter conjunct or aspecting Mars; specific sign-house pairs (the popular list is Mars in Aries in the 1st, Scorpio in the 4th, Capricorn or Cancer in the 7th, Sagittarius or Pisces in the 8th, Taurus or Libra in the 12th; the older verse is narrower, naming Aries-1st, Scorpio-4th, Capricorn-7th, Cancer-8th and Sagittarius-12th); a Leo or Aquarius lagna; and, for matching, both partners being Manglik or the partner having Saturn, Rahu or Ketu in the same houses. Does Mangal Dosha end after 28 years?

This is a widely repeated belief, not a rule from the classical texts. The idea is that Mars 'matures' at 28 and its dosha softens. Many astrologers apply it in practice, so you will hear it; but a chart does not change at 28, and the honest position is that the dosha matters less with age because people marry with more judgement, not because Mars moved.

Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik?

Traditionally a Manglik is matched with another Manglik so the two Mars placements balance, or with a partner whose Saturn, Rahu or Ketu occupies the same houses. Plenty of astrologers will approve a Manglik/non-Manglik match when the dosha is anshik or cancelled, or when the rest of the matching is strong. It is a consideration, not a prohibition.

Can I check Mangal Dosha without my birth time?

Not reliably from the lagna — the houses need the ascendant, which needs a time. You can still check from the Moon and Venus, since those depend on the date more than the hour, but the full three-point check and the cancellations that involve the lagna need a time. Even an approximate one helps.

What are the remedies for Mangal Dosha?

Accepted Answer

The traditional ones are Kumbh Vivah (a symbolic first marriage to a pot, banana tree or idol), Mangal mantra, Hanuman worship on Tuesdays, fasting on Tuesdays and donating red lentils or copper. We do not sell any of these; if this decides a wedding, have a human astrologer look at both charts together.
