In short

Pitra Dosha (Pitru Dosh) is the reading that a chart carries an unsettled debt to the ancestors. It is flagged when the Sun, the Moon or the 9th house and its lord are afflicted by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn — most strongly when the Sun is conjunct Rahu or Ketu, or Rahu sits in the 9th. The traditional remedy is shraddha and tarpan during Pitru Paksha, not a purchase.

What the calculator shows

Each of the seven indicators with a tick or cross and the placement behind it, a grade from none to strong based on how many (and which) apply, and your chart drawn so you can see the Sun, Moon, 9th house and nodes yourself. Because the indicators carry different weight — the Sun with a node counts for more than Saturn's aspect — the grade weights them rather than simply counting.

Why the Sun and the 9th house

In the chart the Sun stands for the father and the paternal line, the 9th house for the father, dharma and inherited fortune, and the Moon for the mother's line. Rahu and Ketu are the karmic axis and Saturn the planet of debt and delay. Put them together and you have the astrological grammar of “something owed to those who came before”. That is the whole of the idea; everything else is elaboration.

A fair warning about fear

Pitra Dosha is among the most-sold remedies in Indian astrology, and a great deal of the writing about it exists to sell pujas. The indicators are common enough that a large share of charts has at least one, so a bare “you have Pitra Dosha” means very little. Look at how many apply, how strong they are, and whether Jupiter or a strong 9th lord softens them. The AI astrologer will do that without an upsell.
