What is Guna Milan (Ashtakoot Milan)?

Guna Milan compares the bride's and groom's Moon positions across eight kootas — Varna (1 point), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8) — for a maximum of 36 gunas. It is the North Indian method of kundli matching; the South Indian equivalent is the ten-porutham system.

How many gunas should match for marriage?

The usual bands: below 18 is traditionally not recommended; 18–24 is acceptable; 25–32 very good; 33–36 excellent. But Nadi (8 points) and Bhakoot (7 points) can override a high total. A 28 with an uncancelled Nadi dosha worries astrologers more than a 20 with clean Nadi and Bhakoot.

Is 28 out of 36 a good match? What about 20, 24, 26?

Accepted Answer

28 is very good; 25 and 26 are the lower end of very good; 20 and 24 are acceptable; anything 18 or above passes the traditional threshold. What matters more than the number is which kootas scored: check that Nadi is not zero (or is cancelled), that Bhakoot is not zero (or cancelled), and that Gana is not zero. The result shows all eight so you can see where the points came from.

What is Nadi dosha and can it be cancelled?

Accepted Answer

Nadi dosha is when both partners have the same nadi (Aadi, Madhya or Antya), so Nadi scores 0 of 8. It is cancelled (Nadi dosha parihar) when the two share a nakshatra but differ in pada, share a rashi but sit in different nakshatras, or have the same nakshatra lord. Pandits differ on the exact list; the calculator applies these three and says which one it used.

What is Bhakoot dosha?

Bhakoot scores 0 of 7 when the two Moon signs are in a 6–8, 2–12 or 5–9 relationship to each other, read as friction in health, money or children respectively. It is cancelled when the two rashi lords are the same planet or natural friends. The calculator applies that rule.

Can I do Guna Milan without a birth time?

Accepted Answer

Usually, yes. All eight kootas use the Moon's nakshatra and rashi, and the Moon stays in one nakshatra for about a day, so on most dates the score is certain without a time. Tick 'time not known' and the calculator tells you if the Moon changed nakshatra that day. Mangal Dosha, which needs the houses, is a separate check.

Question 7

Is 36 out of 36 good or bad?

Accepted Answer

Good. There is a folk belief that a perfect 36 is inauspicious (the story is told about Sita and Rama), but no classical text says so. A perfect score simply means the two Moons are in the same nakshatra and pada, which is rare and, on the gunas, ideal.

Should we do Guna Milan for a love marriage?

Accepted Answer

If the families want it, yes — and it is useful to know where the friction points are. But a score should not break a relationship that works. Treat it as one input; many couples with low scores are happy, and the gunas say nothing about character, values or effort.

What else should be checked besides the gunas?

Accepted Answer

Mangal Dosha in both charts (Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, 12th), the 7th houses and their lords, Venus and Jupiter, the running dashas at the time of marriage, and the D9 (navamsa) charts. Guna Milan looks only at the two Moons; a full matching reads both charts.

Is online Guna Milan accurate?

Accepted Answer

The arithmetic is fixed and identical everywhere if the inputs are right, so the only sources of difference are the Moon positions (ayanamsa, time zone) and which cancellation rules a site applies. Ours uses the Lahiri ayanamsa, resolves birth times through the real time zone of the place, prints both Moons' nakshatra and pada, and states which cancellations it applied.

17 / 17.5	Just below the line; many will still approve if Nadi and Bhakoot are clean.
12–16	Low; families usually ask for a full chart reading and remedies.
Below 12	Very low on the gunas; usually Nadi, Bhakoot and Gana have all failed.
