In short

Nakshatra compatibility (birth star matching) scores two janma nakshatras on the four kootas that depend on the star alone: Tara (3), Yoni (4), Gana (6) and Nadi (8), 21 of the 36 gunas. The same nadi is Nadi dosha and enemy yonis score 0; the remaining 15 points come from the two Moon signs, which most stars fix outright.

What nakshatra matching is

Every kundali has a janma nakshatra, the one of the 27 lunar mansions the Moon was in at birth. Four of the eight Ashtakoot kootas are read from that star and nothing else, so two people who know only their birth stars can already see 21 of the 36 gunas: Tara, the count between the stars, for luck and health; Yoni, the animal of each star, for physical and instinctive fit; Gana, the deva, manushya or rakshasa temperament; and Nadi, the three constitutional types that carry the heaviest eight points. This page scores those four from two pickers, with no dates, times or places.

The four kootas, briefly

Tara counts from each star to the other and divides by nine; if the remainder is 3, 5 or 7 (Vipat, Pratyari, Vadha) that direction scores nothing, otherwise 1.5. Yoni looks up the two animals in the classical 14×14 table: the same animal 4, friends 3, neutral 2, unfriendly 1, and the seven sworn-enemy pairs 0. Gana gives 6 for the same gana, 5 or 6 for deva with manushya, and 0 when a rakshasa star meets a deva or manushya star (the one exception, a rakshasa groom with a deva bride, gets 1). Nadi is simple and heavy: different nadis 8, the same nadi 0, with the cancellations below.

How it differs from rashi matching and the full score

Rashi compatibility uses the two Moon signs and covers the other four kootas, Varna, Vashya, Graha Maitri and Bhakoot, 15 points. The full 36-guna tool does both halves from real birth details. Because every nakshatra sits in one sign, or in two for the nine that straddle a boundary (Krittika, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Dhanishtha, Purva Bhadrapada), this page can usually finish the 36 as well: when both stars fix their signs, or you add the pada, it scores the rashi kootas too and shows the full total. South Indian families will recognise the same four tests as dina, yoni, gana and the nadi check inside the ten poruthams, alongside rajju and vedha, which this page does not compute.

The Nadi and Yoni warnings, calmly

Nadi dosha is the same nadi on both sides. The classical cancellations (parihar) are: the two stars share a lord; the two Moons are in the same nakshatra but different padas; or in the same rashi but different nakshatras. Two of those depend on the pada, which a star picker cannot see, so the result says “depends on pada” rather than guessing, and the pada selects settle it. Enemy yonis (Horse and Buffalo, Cat and Rat, and the other five) are read as mismatched instincts, not as a verdict on the people. Both are traditional signals from two Moon positions; see the Nadi dosha page for the longer story.

What it cannot tell you

Nakshatra matching reads two Moons. It knows nothing about Mangal dosha, the 7th houses and their lords, Venus and Jupiter, the running dashas, the navamsa, or the many nakshatra-level checks a South Indian pandit adds (rajju, vedha, mahendra, stree deergha). It also cannot tell you about character, values or effort. A high score is encouraging; a low one is a reason to cast both kundlis and look properly, not a reason to stop.

How this calculator works

Inputs
Two nakshatras from the pickers, and optionally the pada of each. No ephemeris is used; the page is a table lookup, computed in your browser and never stored.
Star kootas
Tara by count ÷ 9 (3, 5, 7 score 0); Yoni by the classical 14×14 animal table; Gana by the deva/manushya/rakshasa table (rows groom, columns bride); Nadi by Aadi/Madhya/Antya. Same tables as the full Guna Milan tool, so the two always agree.
Nadi cancellations
Same nakshatra lord (always decidable); same nakshatra with different padas and same rashi with different nakshatras (decided when padas are given, otherwise flagged as pada-dependent).
Rashi kootas
Scored only when each star's sign is certain: the star lies in one sign, or its pada is given. Then Varna, Vashya, Graha Maitri and Bhakoot (with the lords-friendly cancellation) complete the 36.
Best matches
Each star's partners ranked by the 21 star points with the star in the groom's position, ties broken by Yoni. Only Gana is direction-sensitive, by at most one point.
