In short

Rashi compatibility compares two partners' Moon signs (chandra rashi, not the Western Sun sign) using the four Ashtakoot kootas that depend only on the sign: Bhakoot (7 points, the distance between the signs), Graha Maitri (5, friendship of the sign lords), Vashya (2) and Varna (1) — 15 of the 36 gunas. Signs 6–8, 2–12 or 5–9 apart score 0 on Bhakoot unless their lords are friends.

What rashi compatibility is (and which sign it means)

In Vedic matching, rashi means the sign the Moon occupied at birth — the chandra rashi, the one your rashi-name comes from. It is not the Sun sign from your birthday, and because the sidereal zodiac runs about 24° behind the tropical one, most people's Moon sign is not even the same sign as their Western Sun sign. The Moon stands for mind and mood, which is why tradition reads the two Moon signs for how a couple will feel around each other day to day. This page takes the two rashis and scores only what the rashis can decide; everything that needs the birth nakshatra is on the nakshatra compatibility page, and the two together make the full 36-guna match.

How the four rashi kootas work

Bhakoot (7) counts the houses between the two signs. If they are 1/1, 3/11, 4/10 or 7/7 apart the pair gets the full 7; if they are 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 apart it gets 0 — Bhakoot dosha — unless the two sign lords are the same planet or natural friends, which cancels it. Graha Maitri (5) looks up the two lords in the classical friendship table: both friends 5, friend and neutral 4, both neutral 3, neutral and enemy 1, friend and enemy ½, both enemies 0. Vashya (2) puts each sign in a group — chatushpada (quadruped), manav (human), jalachar (water), vanchar (wild) or keeta (insect) — and scores how much influence the groom's group has over the bride's. Varna (1) ranks the signs Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra and gives the point when the groom's class is equal to or above the bride's. The last two are directional, which is why swapping the pair can change the total by a point or two.

Reading the chart: which rashi is compatible with which

The grid under the tool scores every pair, groom down the side and bride across the top. Three patterns explain most of it. Same sign is always 15. Opposite signs (7/7) and 3/11 pairs score well because Bhakoot is clear and the elements complement. The low cells are the 6/8 and 2/12 pairs whose lords are not friends — Mesha–Kanya, Mithuna–Karka, Simha–Makara, Tula–Meena and so on — where Bhakoot and Graha Maitri both fail. Cells marked † have a Bhakoot dosha that the lords cancel; we keep them at 0 to agree with the full calculator and say what the total would be if the 7 were awarded.

What rashi matching cannot tell you

It leaves out 21 of the 36 points — Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi, the heaviest koota — because those need the nakshatra. It cannot see Mangal dosha, the 7th houses, the dashas or the navamsa, all of which a full matching reads. And like every koota it describes the sky, not the people: a 6/8 pair who talk well will do better than a 15/15 pair who do not. Use the rashis for what they are good at — a quick, honest read of temperament and a flag for Bhakoot — and treat the number as a starting point.

How the rashi scoring works

Input
Two Moon signs picked from the list — no birth details, nothing computed from the sky, nothing stored. Rows and the first picker are the groom's sign.
Bhakoot
Mutual house distance; 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 score 0, all others 7. Dosha cancelled when the lords are the same planet or score 4+ on Graha Maitri. A cancelled Bhakoot is kept at 0 (the full calculator does the same) and the alternative total is shown.
Graha Maitri
Classical natural friendship of the sign lords: friend/friend 5, friend/neutral 4, neutral/neutral 3, neutral/enemy 1, friend/enemy 0.5, enemy/enemy 0.
Vashya & Varna
Standard rashi tables, read groom to bride. Dhanu is treated as manav and Makara as jalachar throughout (some texts split each by half-sign); Varna: Brahmin > Kshatriya > Vaishya > Shudra.

Sign distance and element

What each Bhakoot distance means, and how the four elements sit together.

DistanceBhakootTraditional reading
1 / 1 (same sign)7Same lord and element; easy understanding, a risk of sameness.
2 / 120 (dosha)Wealth and loss; friction over money and family. Cancelled if the lords are friends.
3 / 117Effort and gains; partners who help each other get on.
4 / 107Home and career; practical, steady, builds something.
5 / 90 (dosha)Children and dharma; same element, so the mildest flaw. Often cancelled by friendly lords.
6 / 80 (dosha)Illness and loss; the most serious Bhakoot flaw. Cancelled only by the same or friendly lords.
7 / 7 (opposite)7The partnership axis; complementary elements, 'opposites attract'.
