What the calculator shows

The full ranking — atmakaraka, amatyakaraka, bhratrikaraka, matrikaraka, putrakaraka, gnatikaraka, darakaraka — each with the planet, its sign and house, and the degree used to rank it; a toggle between the seven- and eight-karaka schemes with a note when they disagree; the karakamsa (the atmakaraka's navamsa sign); and a short reading of what your atmakaraka planet is held to ask of you.

Why degrees, not houses

Parashari astrology reads planets by sign and house; Jaimini's chara karakas ignore both and look only at how far a planet has travelled into whatever sign it is in. A Sun at 29° Libra outranks a Jupiter at 2° Cancer. The idea is that the planet furthest along has the most “experience” — and so carries the soul's agenda.

Seven or eight

Jaimini's sutras can be read either way, and astrologers have argued about it for a long time. The seven-karaka scheme (Sun to Saturn) is older and simpler; the eight-karaka scheme adds Rahu with its degree reversed, and is followed by K. N. Rao's school among others. In most charts both give the same atmakaraka; when they do not, the result tells you, and that is the moment to ask which school your astrologer follows.
