What the calculator shows
The letter-by-letter grid for the system you pick, the compound number and the reduced name number with its planet, a reading of that number, and, for Pythagorean, the soul urge (vowels) and personality (consonants) numbers. Where the Chaldean compound is one tradition singles out (19, 23, 37 on the favoured side; 12, 16, 18, 26 on the cautioned), the note is shown.
Two systems, two answers
Chaldean is older, claims a basis in sound, never assigns 9 to a letter, and treats the unreduced compound as meaningful. Pythagorean is the simpler sequence most Western sites use, and it is where the master numbers 11, 22 and 33 come from. They disagree about most names, and that is expected. If you want to compare your name with your mulank and bhagyank, use Chaldean; that is the convention the comparison comes from.
Name correction, honestly
The practice of tweaking a spelling so the name number becomes “friendly” to the birth number is popular and widely sold. We let you test any spelling free and show the numbers; we do not claim it changes anything beyond how you feel about your name. Nothing here alters a birth chart, and the chart is where the tradition's serious tools live.
How the numbers are computed
- Letters
- Only A–Z are counted; spaces, dots and other marks are ignored; case does not matter.
- Chaldean
- Letter values 1–8 from the chart; compound = sum; name number = compound reduced to one digit (no master numbers).
- Pythagorean
- A–I = 1–9, J–R = 1–9, S–Z = 1–8; expression = all letters; soul urge = vowels; personality = consonants; 11/22/33 kept.
- Compound notes
- Cheiro's traditional readings of compound numbers 10–52.
