What the calculator shows
Your birth tithi and paksha (Shukla Tritiya, Krishna Ashtami…), how far through the tithi you were born, its presiding deity, the yoga and karana, the Moon's nakshatra, the Sun's sidereal sign (which fixes the lunar month), and the date or dates of your Vedic birthday this year and next, in your birth place's time zone.
Why the tithi birthday moves
A lunar month is about 29½ days and twelve of them fall eleven days short of the solar year, so a tithi birthday drifts earlier each year until a leap month (adhika masa) pulls it back. That is why Janmashtami, Diwali and your own janma tithi never sit still on the English calendar. The calculator does not use a table; it scans the year for the day your tithi and your Sun sign coincide at about sunrise.
The five limbs of the panchang
Vara (weekday), tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana. The nakshatra calculator gives the third; this page gives the second, fourth and fifth; the weekday you already know. Together they are the birth panchang a pandit writes at the top of a janam patri.
How this calculator works
- Tithi
- Sidereal Moon longitude minus Sun longitude, divided by 12°; 1–15 Shukla, 16–30 Krishna.
- Yoga · karana
- Yoga = (Moon + Sun) ÷ 13°20′; karana = each half-tithi, with the four fixed karanas at the month's ends.
- Vedic birthday
- Each day of the target year at 06:00 local: if the Sun is in your birth Sun sign and the Moon is in your birth tithi, that day qualifies.
- Unknown time
- Noon is used; the result says whether the tithi changed on your birth date.
